Here's the transcript. Enjoy.
Let's talk about food today. Let's talk about what trends there were last year. Last year, whatwas big?
First, kale was big. Kale was a super food. It's a bit like spinach. I can't find it here in Japan where I live.
The next big deal was quinoa. Quinoa is a grain from Peru. Everyone puts it in their cereal
and makes stuff with it. Quinoa.
Paleo diets. A Paleo diet is the diet of caveman. People eat exactly what they ate back in
caveman days. No added ingredients, so they're eating supernatural. People who lived on
that diet thousands of years ago lived to about 30, so people who knock the Paleo diet tend
to bring that point up.
Gluten free. Gluten free bread we all know. Gluten free beer, did you know that? Gluten free dog food, did you know that? Everyone's loving not loving gluten, and I think rather than a
trend, that will be here to stay.
The Asian cuisines were big; your Peking Duck, Korean BBQ ribs, Chinese Fried Chicken
(I said the wrong thing, sorry).
That was last year. This year, what's going to be big this year? From this article, I found this out. Savory ice-cream, savory yogurt. I can see that working. I'd eat it.
Fermented food - natto. Yeah, natto. Everyone here loves it. Natto - fermented food. Yeah, natto and ...................? See we don't do much fermented food, so I don't know many, if any.
Pistachio nuts - pistachio nuts are going to be big. I can see why cause they're so lovely. I
love sitting there, drinking beer and opening them up (nom, nom, nom). Fantastic.
Spicy ramen. Of course spicy ramen, cause spicy ramen is the best.
Bitter everything. Bitter greens, like kale, like spinach. Bitter chocolate. Bitter chocolate's
good. Bitter coffee. Bitter coffee's good.
That's what's going to happen, according to this article.
What about fast food restaurants? What's coming up with them? A lot of food companies,
including YUM - we all know YUM - they're the people who own the KFC in China who are
having all sorts of trouble. What millennials what. A millennial is a person who came of age
in the millennium. So they'd be twenties, or thirties; and people are marketing directly to
Loyalty programs are going to be big. Excellent. More point cards for me to collect and use.
And voice ordering on your mobile through an app. They're going to have this cool app and
it talks to you and stuff, so that's what that story's about.
So thank you very much. Transcript up tomorrow. And I didn't say 'Um' once. Nice. I know I
say 'Um' too much. Thank you. See you later.
